Troubleshooting Installation

If you install the plugin and don't see it working, these are the first things to check.

  • Does ModPlugin (or freecycleedinburgh if you're using an old version) appear in the list under Tools->Add-ons? If not, then you haven't got it installed.
  • Do you see the tile icon (the blue thing at the top left of this page) on the taskbar at the bottom of your browser? If not, then the plugin hasn't installed properly - try restarting Firefox, and then rebooting.
  • Is the tile icon present, but grey? If so then you've accidentally disabled the plugin. Click on the tile icon again to turn it blue, and reload your page.
  • Is the tile icon present, and blue, but nothing happens on your group? If your group doesn't have "Freecycle" in the name, then the plugin won't monitor it by default. You'll need to Configure groups to monitor.
  • Do you have the IETab plugin installed? If so, try disabling it.
  • Do you have the Property Bee plugin installed? If so, try disabling it.
  • Do you have the HP Smart Web Printing plugin installed?  If so, try disabling it.
  • Do you have the "NoScript" plugin installed? If so, it blocks Java as well as JavaScript, so will prevent the plugin from running. You will need to allow Java to run for Yahoo.com.
  • Do you have AVG Safe Search 8.00 installed with Firefox 3? That doesn't work due to bugs in AVG. Disable that plugin under Tools->Add-ons.
  • Do you have the right version of Java installed? Check Install Java to be sure, and make sure you don't have any versions older than Update 18 installed.
  • Were you unable to install Java when running on a Pentium II processor? You need an old Java - get it here.
  • Do you have Java enabled within Firefox? Check this on the Tools->Options->Content configuration:

For Mac users, go to Firefox Preferences->Content to see if Java is enabled.
  • Similarly, do you have Javascript enabled?
  • Do you have cookies enabled? Check this on Tools->Options->Privacy:

If you're worried about allowing all third-party cookies, then see here.

  • Don't forget that when you have Java installed, to go to the Java Console in Control Panel and turn off automatic updates.
  • Do you have Kaspersky Internet Suite 2009 installed? This seems to cause problems with the plugin - try removing it.
  • Have you recently upgraded to Firefox 2.0.0.8 on Windows Vista? Right-click the Firefox icon and select Run as administrator then restart Firefox and try again.
  • Do you use a domain name for your group which automatically redirects people to the Yahoo group? For example www.oldhamfreecycle.org.uk automatically redirects people to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OldhamFreecycle/ If so, you must make sure that this automatic redirection is uncloaked. The plugin will not work with cloaked domains since it cannot see Yahoo's url.
  • Are you running on a Mac and seeing no OK or Cancel buttons, or blank windows? Check you've set the preferences in Mac and Linux Preferences.
  • Are you running on a Mac and seeing Firefox crash? Check the following, and if you have multiple versions of these files, be sure to remove the old ones.
    • Check that your /User/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder contains the JavaPluginCocoa.bundle.
    • Check that your /Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder contains:
      • Java Applet.plugin
      • Java Applet Plugin Enabler
      • JavaEmbeddingPlugin.bundle
      • the JavaEmbeddingPlugin0.9.6.3 folder.

A couple of things are known to help:

  • Some people have found that after installing Java they need to reboot or turn off their machine a couple of times, and then it'll mysteriously work. We don't know why this would be, but it's worth a try.
  • Try reinstalling the latest version of Firefox that's compatible with your OS.
  • Some people, usually on Vista, have found that if they uninstall Firefox, then install Java from the Sun site, then install Firefox, then the plugin - it works.

If none of these help, then ask for help on the group.
