Showing multiple recipients
From PluginWiki
Sometimes people will send a message to multiple groups at the same time. You can ask the plugin to flag this for you, from the Advanced Options configuration:
Any messages sent to multiple recipients will get flagged like this:
You need to move your mouse over the warning to see the list of recipients.
You can include these recipients in your standard messages - see Standard Messages#Substitution Strings.
Why isn't this the same as crossposting?
When you check for crossposting, the plugin looks at Yahoo's pages, either the messages page, or (if you've set it up and you're a moderator on that group) the pending page. But for it to spot a message on there:
- the message needs to have actually reached Yahoo and shown up, which can take a while
- for the messages page, it may need to have been approved - which can take a while longer, if the member is moderated.
What this multiple recipients check does is not to look at the Yahoo groups pages - just at the headers of the message as it appears on your group. This is a bit like looking at a memo to see if it says on it that it's been copied to someone else, rather than going round looking in people's in-trays to see if it's there.
Here's a bit more detail. If someone sends a mail to multiple recipients, then each of them will see that in the To: field. A bit like this:
To: "Edward Hibbert" <Edward.Hibbert@metaswitch.com>, "Mod Group" <moderationplugin@yahoogroups.com>
When that mail reaches your group, then it's clear from the To: field that it's been sent to multiple people. That may mean it's been sent to multiple groups, or perhaps to one or more groups and other email addresses.
If they use BCC, or send the mail separately multiple times, then there won't be multiple entries in the To: field, though the crosspost checking would still catch it because it would appear on the messages or pending pages for the groups you're checking.
