This is the most complicated way of installing, but once you've done it a couple of times it'll become second nature.

Saving the file

You should back up before updating.

You'll be sent a new release either as an attachment, or as a link (e.g. http://ehibbert.org.uk/extension/freecycle.v0.562.xpi). Either way you need to save it to disk first.

While each email program is different, the following guidelines should be of help. You may need to follow slightly different procedures to deal with attachments or to save the extension .xpi file and if you have problems then please try the help file for your own email software. Remember that the images shown are for my own software, and that yours may look different but will generally contain the same (or similar) options to choose from.

Right click on the icon that your software uses for the freeycle.xpi file and choose "save"

You may see a dialogue box that tells you that the file is the wrong type. Something like this:-

Click on "No"

I know that this looks wrong, but the question being asked here is not "should I save this file yes/no?", the question being asked is "should I change the name of this file yes/no?" and the answer therefore is "No".

In the dialogue box that shows next, choose the folder (directory) that you want to save the extension file into and click "Save"

Note:- If your software still has the .zip after the filename - just change the name to have .xpi instead and then click "Save"

Updating from a saved file

Now that you have the extension saved you need to start Firefox in order to install it. Once Firefox is running, enter the location of the saved file (as in c:\temp\freecycle.xpi) into the URL bar of Firefox and carry on as normal, as shown here:-

That should then start the installation process.

You may find that once it's installed, Tools->Add-ons still shows the same version number. That doesn't mean that it hasn't installed properly.
