Colour-coding Subjects

From PluginWiki

Jump to: navigation, search

We spend a lot of time checking whether the subjects of messages are correct. Different groups have different formats, but common things to check for are:

  • Whether the subject contains one of the right keywords - OFFER, WANTED, TAKEN or RECEIVED.
  • Whether the subject contains a location.
  • Punctuation in the subject (e.g. locations must be in brackets).

You configure whether you want colour-coding on the Pending or Messages pages.

The plugin helps you with this by colour-coding the subject lines green or red, depending on whether they're valid.

A good subject line gets flagged like this:

A bad subject line gets flagged like this:

A common reason for subject lines to be flagged red is that the plug-in thinks they're missing a location. The plug-in can only spot locations in two ways:

  • By using punctuation (e.g. brackets) to identify which bit is the location. You can configure the punctuation it will accept - see Advanced Subject Options.
  • Checking against a specific list of locations to ensure that one of them is in the subject line - see Checking for specific locations.

So occasionally you'll see a subject that looks fine to you, but is colour-coded red - that's because the plug-in can't tell where the location is (or you've not configured it to do so).

Firefox will also colour-code links if you've clicked on them.  So you might see that instead of the red or green colour.  Or if it fails to load the content to preview a message, then it will appear as a normal link, usually blue.
