What is it?

There's a buddy system for getting people started. This means that you can get help from some kind, patient people. This will both get you up and running more quickly, and keep the group relatively free of the basic installation and setup queries.

How can get I one?

If you think you might benefit from this, please mail ModerationPluginBuddies@yahoogroups.com (click here) with:

  • Your geographic location
  • What operating system you're using (Windows, Mac etc).

Someone will get in touch and try to sort you out.

Do I need to send flowers?

Nope, it's all free.

Can I be a Buddy?

We can always use more volunteers. Have a read of this list and see if you think you'd be suitable.

  • You'll generally be helping people through the First-time Installation and Initial setup stuff - so all that needs to be second nature.
  • You should probably have been using the plugin for at least a couple of months.
  • You should be a bit technical - not necessary a coder, but pretty computer literate and curious about how stuff works (which is useful in working out why it's not working).
  • You should be able to recognise and resolve the various things in Troubleshooting Installation.
  • You should be able to set up User DB lookup and Sending by Email.
  • You should know the various anti-spam measures (Check Recently Joined Members, Spammer List, Membership Crosscheck).
  • You should be happy with finding information in this wiki, and also prepared to edit the wiki and improve it.
  • You should have an hour or two a month to spare. There's no set workload - we just parcel out the people who want buddies as they crop up.
  • You should be prepared - and even enjoy - jumping in on the group and answering people's questions.  You'll also need to be willing and comfortable with helping others constructively - by email, phone or funky conferencing software.
  • Just like moderation, you might be dealing with people who are a bit frustrated or in unfamiliar territory, so if you're already feeling frazzled from moderating, or if you'd feel offended if you offered and got turned down, then this might not be for you.

Having said that, it's not as scary as it might sound.  You're not expected to solve stuff by yourself, and if you get stuck you can always ask on the group or mail Edward.

If this sounds like your sort of thing, mail Edward with:

  • your location
  • roughly what times of day you're available
  • what OSs you're familiar with (we're particularly short on Mac expertise)
  • a bit of a general introduction.
